Yesterday, after the dust settled on Simone Biles and Aly Raisman winning historic Gold-Silver in the women’s Floor Routine the gymnastics world was entirely focused on the men’s final of the High Bar (the male equivalent to the uneven bars in women’s gymnastics). Dutch gymnast Epke Zonderland was determined to not be forgotten amongst a sea of headlines proclaiming this year’s American Women’s Gymnastics Team the greatest in history (on paper Team USA Women are the greatest ever), but instead of going for Gold he did the next best thing and faceplanted in primetime.
Speaking about his epic faceplant Epke Zonderland later remarked:
“I timed it a little bit wrong. I almost got it and I thought I had it, that’s why I tried to stick on the bar but I slipped away and I fell on my tummy.”
If this was a normal sporting event I’d make a GIF of that faceplant and I’d share it with you right here, but this is The Rio Olympics and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) has expressly forbid the making of any GIFs of these Olympic Games and they’re straight up banning Twitter accounts left and right for doing so as well as sending takedown notices.
