On January 9, 2022, Eric Weddle was retired from the game of football. On Sunday, he became a Super Bowl champion.

Weddle, 37, retired from the NFL at the end of the 2019 season. He did not play a single down throughout the entire 2020 and 2021 seasons.

After the end of the regular season, the Rams saw injuries to two of their safeties. As a result, head coach Sean McVay gave Weddle a call to gage his interest.

One day later, Weddle was in Los Angeles practicing with the team. The plan was for the veteran to provide leadership and depth, but he ended up being thrust into a crucial role as the playoffs went on and led the Rams defense in tackles during the NFC Championship.

Prior to Super Bowl LVI, it was announced that he would be doing something incredible during the game.

That narrative took an even more insane twist during the first half.

Weddle suffered an early injury but refused to come out of the game. He was strapped up with a brace on the sideline that kept the right side of his body from contorting into any awkward positions and went right back in.

It was clearly affecting him during the game but that didn’t stop him from recording four tackles and playing a crucial role on defense.

After the game, it was revealed that Weddle ruptured his pectoral muscle.

Think about that for a second….

Weddle, at 37 years old, essentially played the majority of Super Bowl LVI without a right pectoral muscle after being retired less than two months ago. That’s crazy.

Following the win, Weddle said that he will be headed back into retirement. But surgery comes first.

What a warrior. In a game where Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford, Andrew Whitworth, Jalen Ramsey, Van Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr., and quite a few other “big-name” players will steal the headlines, Weddle deserves proper recognition for his remarkable performance. Legend.
