Video games have a reputation for managing to spawn a fair amount of rage in players when things don’t go their way. Many of those people end up taking out their anger on the nearest inanimate object, but one esports competitor in Germany has been hit with a lengthy ban after clocking an opponent in the face at a tournament.
If you play video games on a regular basis, there’s a very good chance you’ve found yourself attempting to resist the urge to throw your controller at the wall or smash a keyboard in frustration on at least a few occasions.
Those fits of rage can stem from repeatedly being stonewalled by a particularly difficult level, mission, or boss. However, you don’t really have any recourse in those situations because you’re essentially getting mad at a computer.
You do, on the other hand, have a real, actual person to be mad at when you find yourself bested in a multiplayer game. Some people vent by screaming at their foe over their headset or going out of their way to shoot them an angry message, but there’s usually a veil of anonymity that prevents you from knowing who you were bested by.
That also means you rarely get the chance to confront them in real life, and I’d argue that’s a good thing when you consider you should probably do some serious soul-searching if you ever feel like that’s something you need to do. However, there is an exception in the form of in-person tournaments, including one gathering in Germany that was the source of some major drama.
A CS2 player earned a 10-year ban after punching an opponent on stage in the wake of a match
Over the weekend, the German city of Leipzig was the site of the CAGGTUS gaming festival, which was marketed as the “largest LAN party in the German-speaking world.”
The three-day affair, which began on April 17th and wrapped up on the 19th, featured gamers going head-to-head in a variety of esports competitions. That included a Counter-Strike 2 tournament, which wrapped up on Sunday when the team known as “Legendenlobby” successfully defended its title in a match against Full Shock.
According to Dot Esports, the winning squad boasted a player known as Spidergum, who managed to get the best of Full Shock’s MAUschine during the match. Things came to a head when the two teams met on stage for the trophy presentation, as things took a very unexpected turn when the latter punched the former in the face while walking by him.

The outlet reports the confrontation seemingly stemmed from Spidergum mocking MAUschine by shouting his signature catchphrase (“Papichulo”), and the gamer who threatened to knock him out over the perceived slight attempted to make good on that promise with the punch that ultimately left him stunned.
DACH CS Masters, the organization overseeing the tournament, subsequently announced MAUschine had been banned from its competitions for a minimum of ten years while adding it will be reporting the incident to the Esports Integrity Commission. Spidergum could also pursue additional legal action, and a team he’s affiliated with said it would provide him with support on that front.
He laughed the incident off in a tweet where he took a victory lap while mocking his opponent for having better aim on the stage than he did while playing the game, but we’ll have to wait and see if there will be any additional repercussions.
