Surely, things could not possibly get worse for the Atlanta Falcons during the 2022 NFL season, right?

The Falcons currently sit at 5-10, which is the sixth-worst record in the entire NFL. Head coach Arthur Smith seems to have lost all composure, and quarterback Marcus Mariota straight packed up his stuff and left after being benched.

That has to be rock bottom. Except, it wasn’t.

Falcons wide receiver Cameron Batson, who has spent most of the season on the practice squad, was arrested early Saturday morning and the details of the incident are downright bananas.

Batson was pulled over early Saturday for speeding and failing to stay in his lane. But that was just the start of what would become an absolutely wild situation.

According to a release from the Atlanta Police Department, Batson was pulled over around 2 a.m. Saturday after speeding and failing to maintain his lane on an interstate. Police said Batson was deemed intoxicated by an officer before the situation turned physical after the wide receiver allegedly resisted arrest.

During the altercation, according to police, the officer fired his gun, hitting no one, before Batson got back into his truck and drove away. Police say he crashed the truck, fled on foot and was found hiding by police and arrested.

The Falcons addressed the situation via a statement on Saturday afternoon.

“We have been made aware of an overnight incident involving Cameron Batson and are currently gathering information from law enforcement agencies,” the team said. “We take this matter seriously and have no further comment at this time.”

Atlanta hosts the Arizona Cardinals at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both teams are already eliminated from playoff contention.
