Fans Aren’t Buying Jerry Jones’ Reason For Snubbing Jimmy Johnson Again

In 2021, Jerry Jones presented former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson with his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring during halftime of a game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

And yet, 29 years since Johnson won back-to-back Super Bowls, Jones still has not inducted Jimmy – one just six coaches to win consecutive Super Bowls – into the Cowboys Ring of Honor.

In 2021, Jones finally said he was going to put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor when pressed about it by Terry Bradshaw with Troy Aikman also on hand.

Note: he didn’t say when that would happen, something Jimmy Johnson obviously noticed when he asked Jerry, “While I’m alive?”

It didn’t happen in 2022 and when pressed about it by NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs, Jones got a little testy.

“I’ve said I’m going to put him in,” Jones shot back. “Now, when I put him in, and the circumstances and what I do with that, there’s a lot more than Jimmy to think about here, and I’ve got a lot of other lives out here that have laid a lot on the line on the field that need to be in that Ring of Honor as well. And so how I do that, what I do it with, I get to make that decision, and it isn’t at the end of the day all tailored around whether Jimmy is sniveling or not.”

Fast forward another year to 2023 and Jerry Jones has announced that defensive end DeMarcus Ware will be put into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor, but not 80-year-old Jimmy Johnson.

Ware will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year.

When asked why Jimmy Johnson was excluded again, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Jerry Jones replied, “There’s no waiting as much as it is, how and when we do something. The waiting term isn’t a product of this process. Everybody that is going to go in there in the future is waiting.

“The point is that because we’re open for business at the Ring of Honor that there’s some order of things. When you start talking about timing, that’s never been an idea or presented at all.”

That is quite the word salad right there.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Jones added, “I think that it’s very important to realize this is DeMarcus’ time, this is his year. He’s a player. Jimmy’s not. Okay? And so I wanted to put him in because it’s him and I wanted to put a player in.”

That response had many NFL fans asking if Jimmy Johnson being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 wasn’t “his time” or “his year” then when will it be?

“When Jimmy got inducted, whose yr was that?” read another comment.

“Says a man who made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame despite never playing. Sad,” read one comment.

“Did u promise DeMarcus two years ago on public tv you would put him in? U did that to Jimmy,” another angry Cowboys fan wrote. “Swallow ur pride and get Jimmy in there ASAP!”
