It took three additional periods of overtime to determine a winner of Wednesday’s college basketball game between Fordham and UMass. Rahsool Diggins set a program record for points scored after profusely vomiting during the first half and it was not the only history made!
Both teams combined for an absurd amount of fouls, which also resulted in multiple NCAA records.
The Rams hosted the Minutemen for a 7:00 p.m. ET tip at Rose Hill Gym. Not one single person left their seats even though the college basketball game did not go final until 10:45 p.m. ET, more than three and a half hours later. That includes the swim team behind the basket. They wore speedos throughout the first-ever triple-overtime game in the gymnasium’s 100-year-old history.
However, Fordham did not win at home. UMass pulled out a two-point victory behind 46 points from Diggins.

The senior point guard, who actually began his career at UConn, played the best game of his life after a classic boot-and-rally. He removed his shirt to spill his guts in a nearby trashcan during the first half.

Rahsool Diggins proceeded to shoot more than 20 times over the next 40 minutes and accounted for almost 40% of his team’s scoring. It was a war that went right down to the final buzzer.
The Rams and Minutemen combined for an astonishing 122 (!!) free throw attempts, which stemmed from 79 (!!) personal fouls. That was the most free throw attempts in a Division-I college basketball game since 1996-97. It was also the most combined personal fouls since 2017.
10 players also fouled out of the game as a result of the constant whistle. That, too, is an NCAA record. Fordham was at one point forced to play its walk-ons during the third overtime period. UMass took advantage of the thin-stretched opponent and squeaked out a win.
Between the mid-game vomit, fouls, free throws and overtimes, Wednesday night in the Bronx was wild!
