Georgia baseball player Tre Phelps was unable to finish the Bulldogs’ most recent NCAA Tournament matchup vs Liberty. The slugger was ejected following a home run.
Head coach Wes Johnson says his star player was simply waving at his parents behind the first base dugout. Umpires believed he was taunting the opposing team.
As a result of the ejection, Phelps will be forced to miss his next game. That matchup will come in the Super Regional where the Bulldogs host Mississippi State.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Phelps turned on a 3-2 pitch and sent it 368 feet out to left field. The two-run bomb gave the Bulldogs a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Georgia won the game, 6-1. In doing so, it advanced to the Super Regional round.
Phelps did not play the last three innings of the Bulldogs’ victory. He was tossed after rounding the bases following the sixth inning homer.
Umpires cited taunting in their reasoning for the ejection. Phelps was animated for the entirety of his 30-second trot around the basepath.
While making his way down the first base line, Phelps turned toward the opposing dugout. It appeared as though he was gesturing to Liberty players. His head coach says he was not.
Phelps’ parents were in the stands.

“Tre’s family was sitting up in the stands. Tre was waving at his family,” said Wes Johnson after the game. Johnson also got tossed arguing with the umpire that ejected Tre Phelps.
“The umpires thought he was talking to the dugout. Tre got ejected. He will miss Game 1 of the Super Regional.”
In-game ejections carry a one-game suspension in college baseball. We’ve seen multiple instances this postseason, some of which have proven extremely costly.
UCLA lost its Regional despite being the nation’s top seed. The shorthanded Bruins dropped their opener in the tournament with starting centerfielder Will Gasparino on the bench.
Virginia, meanwhile, watched its season end on Sunday with a loss to Jacksonville State. Two Cavaliers were suspended from the contest due to taunting ejections.
Tre Phelps is Georgia baseball’s top hitter. He’s currently batting .370 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs.
He will not be on the field for the next game vs. Mississippi State. The Bulldogs hope his absence doesn’t come back to bite.
