Georgia Dome Implosion: Videos Of The Stadium Getting Demolished By 4,500 Pounds Of Dynamite

After 25 years, more than 1,400 events, and hosting over 37 million guests, the Georgia Dome was demolished on Monday morning. More than 300 pounds of explosives collapsed the steel in the upper ring of the stadium and approximately 4,500 pounds of dynamite crumbled the concrete columns of the structure. The implosion of the Georgia Dome happened in 15 seconds and went off without damaging the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which stands only 80 feet away from its predecessor.

However, there were two sections of the dome’s outside walls still standing once the dust cleared. Rick Cuppelitti, executive vice president of lead demolition contractor Adamo Group, said those sections will be mechanically demolished. “We have to investigate whether the charges (in those sections) went off,” he said. “If the charges went off, it’s not going to take much at all (to knock the walls down).” Otherwise, the demolition went as planned.

Before it was reduced to a pile of rubble, the Georgia Dome has been home to the Atlanta Falcons since 1992. The Atlanta institution hosted entertainment acts and major sporting events including the Olympics, Super Bowl XXVIII, Super Bowl XXXIV, the Final Four, the SEC Championship in college football, and the Peach Bowl. The Falcons’ final home game in the Georgia Dome was their 2017 NFC Championship Game win over the Green Bay Packers. The Georgia Dome was replaced by the $1.6 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will be home to the Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United. The Georgia Dome will now be a parking lot for the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
