Giants Reportedly Passed On Playing Daniel Jones Vs. Jets Despite Passing Medical Tests

The New York Giants gave quarterback Daniel Jones a four-year, $160 million contract in the offseason.

The deal was a vote of confidence for the player they selected with the sixth pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

But thus far, Jones hasn’t repaid that confidence.

The 26-year-old threw for just 884 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions in his first five start of the 2023 season.

He then suffered a neck injury which has sidelined for each of New York’s last three games, including an overtime loss to the crosstown rival New York Jets on Sunday.

But now it seems that the Giants may have already lost some faith in Jones.

Ian Rapaport reports that Jones was cleared to play prior to Sunday’s game against the Jets.

Instead, New York opted to start Tyrod Taylor in his place. And when Taylor himself was injured, third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito entered the game.

Giants coach Brian Daboll has defended his starting quarterback throughout the season. But he was caught throwing a tablet in the direction of Jones after an interception in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Though Daboll claims it wasn’t directed at Jones.

“No, I wouldn’t throw a tablet there,” Daboll said when asked if he intended to throw the table at Jones. “I just tossed it to the side because obviously it was a little bit of frustration, but, no, I wouldn’t throw a tablet at him.

“Again, the tablet thing, I’d have to go back and see it,” he said later in his press conference. “But again, I remember exactly what it is. We were talking about a particular play, and I just tossed it off to the side.”

New York has a potential out from Jones’ contract following the 2024 season.

But even that leaves the franchise with a ton of dead money.

So both the Giants, and Jones, have to figure things out, and quickly.
