The interstate high school football game between Grayson and Miami Carol City ended in fireworks. A brawl broke out between the teams from Florida and Georgia during the handshake line.
It was an unfortunate and ugly end to an incredible defensive battle.
Both high school football teams are likely to face a formal reprimand from their respective governing bodies. The FHSAA and GHSAA will review the incident in the coming days. Suspensions are inevitable. It is a matter of how many.
Miami Carol City traveled from Florida to Grayson in Georgia.
These two teams are among the best in the southeast. Grayson High School is located in Loganville, Georgia to the east of Atlanta. Miami Carol City is located in Miami Gardens, Florida, closer to Hollywood than Miami. They are separated by more than 650 miles in total.
Carol City traveled north to Grayson on Friday night. The Chiefs entered at 3-2 as one of the top-50 high school football teams in the United States and one of the top-ranked teams in the Sunshine State. The Rams entered at 2-3 as one of the top-100 high school football teams in the United States and one of the top-20 teams in the Peach State. It was a huge matchup between legitimate national title contenders.
Both teams had scored more than 100 total points through their first five games of the season. Neither team scored more than 10 on Friday.
Grayson held a 10-0 lead at halftime. Miami Carol City fought back with a touchdown and a field goal in the third quarter.
However, the Chiefs had kicking problems throughout the entire night. They missed a field goal early in the second quarter and missed the extra point after the touchdown in the third quarter. It was 10-9 after 36 minutes. They missed another field goal early in the fourth quarter.
Carol City ultimately set up a (likely) game-winning field goal with just under 30 seconds remaining but the kick never made it past the line of scrimmage. However, the field was littered with penalty flags so the Chiefs were somehow still alive!

They got the ball right back at their own 38-yard-line with 12 seconds left. It didn’t matter. Nothing came of the extra possession. A deep pass on the final play fell incomplete.

Game over. The Rams won 10-9.
The high school football game ended with a brawl.
Although these two programs do not have a deep-rooted history, this high-stakes matchup meant a lot to both sides. They were hitting harder, playing faster and talking a lot of trash back and forth throughout all four quarters.
The tension eventually reached its boiling point after the final whistle. A brawl ensued in the handshake line. What started as some initial pushing and shoving very quickly. Haymakers were flying.
A not so great ending to this one. pic.twitter.com/BPujflNasN

It was not just a scuffle. It was a violent melee.

At one point, multiple Carol City players were throwing punches at a Grayson player who was lying on the ground.
This had been boiling over all night.

One of those players is Georgia linebacker commit Temorris Campbell Jr. He got involved with three separate piles and even appeared to stomp on the Chiefs player who was outnumbered 5-to-1.
It is currently unclear as to how the FHSAA and GHSAA plan to handle this situation. Because it was played between teams from two different states, both individual governing bodies of high school football will have to review the footage and determine any potential punishments. I would imagine that multiple Carol City players will be suspended, including Campbell. The Grayson players who threw a punch might also be punished for fighting even if they did not initiate the brawl.
