Gus Malzahn is headed back Auburn. The former Tigers head football coach is moving back to The Plains following his latest stint with Florida State.

He shared a photo of him and his wife on social media to commemorate the return. Kristi Malzahn did not appear thrilled!

While the expression did not truly represent her feelings of moving back to Alabama, it did shed light on the strain that comes along with marrying a college football coach.

Gus Malzahn is moving back to Auburn.

He attended the Tigers‘ most recent spring scrimmage last week. New head coach Alex Golesh plans to use him as a resource.

Malzahn boasts boatloads of experience in D1 football. He spent a decade on The Plains as a play caller and head coach. He’s also held notable roles at Arkansas, Tulsa, Arkansas State, UCF, and Florida State.

His coaching career dates back to 1991 when he took over as offensive coordinator at Hughes High School. He got his first college gig with the Razorbacks 15 years later.

During Malzahn’s time on the sidelines, he coached in five conference championships and two national titles. He was widely considered a top offensive mind during his time in the SEC.

“Super grateful for him, and Kristi and the support that they’ve shown myself and my wife, which has been awesome,” Golesh said. “Super grateful to have a wealth of knowledge here, and a guy that cares about Auburn so dearly.”

Golesh got to know Malzahn as a rival when the two coached at South Florida and UCF, respectively. Now, they will be on the same team.

While the return to Auburn is welcomed, it also highlighted his nomadic past which many experience in the profession of coaching.

The Malzahns have moved 18 times in 37 years.

I will start by saying that I do not feel bad for Gus or Kristi Malzahn. No one will. He’s made millions to coach a game. His net worth is reportedly north of eight figures.

With that said, it is a challenging lifestyle. Expectations are higher than ever. Success is demanded each and every season. Failure will result in firing.

Malzahn found that out at Auburn. He was let go in 2020 despite winning 66% of his games and frequently being a thorn in Nick Saban’s side.

One of his successors did, too, resulting in fallout from Hugh Freeze’s daughter.

It’s worth noting that many of Malzahn’s moves were linked to promotions. Still, it doesn’t make the difficulties of relocating any less.

Gus Malzahn’s wife made that clear with his sarcastic expression to the latest home swap. Having moved three times in the last decade, I feel her pain!

With the head coach now retired, the constant movement should stop. Kristi Malzahn certainly hopes so.
