A high school basketball program in the state of South Carolina has been disqualified from the playoffs. The removal stems from the team having an ineligible player on the roster.

Intel into that supposedly ineligible player was leaked by an anonymous source after the team advanced to the Lower State Championship Game. Rather than continue competing for a state title, the season is over.

Ashley Ridge is the school in question. On Monday, the squad beat Ridge View in quadruple overtime to advance to the Lower State finals. On Tuesday, it was kicked out of the postseason field.

That decision was appealed later in the week. On Thursday, Ashley Ridge got its ruling. The disqualification stood with a 14-0 vote.

The Ashley Ridge basketball player wasn’t named in the case, but the issue seems to stem from a transfer from a previous high school. Her residency came into question, as did the school’s filing of proper paperwork.

The athletic director didn’t necessarily deny rule breaking. They simply stated that it was an oversight by the administration. Making things a bit cloudier, it’s been reported that the player’s sibling still attends the school in which the Ashley Ridge player transferred from and still uses the same home address.

There is one last chance to appeal, but the latest outcome doesn’t bode well for the high school basketball team. Unfortunately, the players are the ones hurt the most by this administrative oversight. Their State Championship pursuit now ends in contentious fashion.
