Camp Point Central was forced to cancel its Homecoming high school football game because of its opponent. The Unity-Payson co-op program is dealing with a mysterious outbreak of a skin infection.
No further details have been provided at this time.
Unfortunately, this means the Panthers will not be able to continue their undefeated high school football season this weekend. They were all-but penciled-in for a win that will no longer reflect on their overall record.
Camp Point Central had to cancel Homecoming.
Central High School is located in Camp Point, Illinois on the westernmost border of the state, about 140 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. It enrolls less than 300 students in Grades 9-12. The Panthers compete in Class 1A for high school football as members of the Western Illinois Valley Conference. They won their first and only state championship in 2023.
The 2026 high school football season is off to a strong start. Central began the year at 4-0 by a combined score of 385-27. It could be a legitimate title contender. Three of the Panthers’ four remaining opponents are 1-3 or 0-4 so an undefeated regular season is not out of the realm of possibility if they can take care of business and the game against 4-0 Brown County results in a win.
Unfortunately, they will not play all nine regular season games as scheduled.
Central High School announced that its Homecoming game, which was set for Friday at 7:00 p.m., will not be played. Its opponent is unable to play. The administration could not find a replacement.
All Homecoming activities on Thursday and Friday are still going to continue as planned. The game is off.
The Unity High School football team is dealing with a skin infection.
Central was supposed to play the co-op team from Unity-Payson on Friday. Payson-Seymour High School does not have enough players to field a full team so it joined forces with Unity High School. The Mustangs started the 2026 high school football season at 0-4.
It seemed like the Panthers were in store for another big win over an inferior opponent on Homecoming. That is no longer the case. The game is canceled. The cancelation stems from an undisclosed “skin infection outbreak” within the Unity varsity football team.
Unity High School did provide any further information about the infection. However, we can assume it is likely one of three things:
- MRSA/Staph infection is most commonly associated with contact sports because it spreads through skin-to-skin contact and shared equipment.
- Ringworm also spreads through direct contact and contaminated surfaces.
- Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infections that spreads through close contact.
If I had to guess, Unity is dealing with a Staph outbreak. A Texas high school football team is currently dealing with the same. It happened to my JV team in high school. MRSA nearly cost me one of my toes because of how fast it spread!
The Mustangs would not make this call if it was not in the best interest of student-athletes from both programs but I don’t quite understand why they didn’t say what it is. “Skin infection outbreak” is far more mysterious than the truth.
