Iowa Newspaper Had The Perfect Headline For The Hawkeyes’ Uninspiring Offensive Performance In Week 1

The offensive showing for the Iowa Hawkeyes’ season opener was, for lack of a better word, lacking. The team scored seven points against South Dakota State, though they didn’t find the endzone.

Instead, Iowa converted on a field goal and a pair of safeties. The Hawkeyes totaled just 166 yards of offense against an FCS opponent. While the Jackrabbits will be a championship contender at the lower level, it’s a game that Iowa hopes to dominate on a regular basis.

But they landed far from that goal on Saturday.

In fact, the Hawkeyes began setting some records, most for the wrong reasons.

Apparently, they’ve become the first program in college football history to win a game by scoring seven points while not scoring a touchdown.

They also built on what’s becoming trend for the Hawkeyes on the gridiron.

Following Iowa’s win, a local newspaper concocted the perfect headline to sum up the afternoon.

Newspaper trolls Iowa with headline after embarrassing offensive showing

After the game, CR Gazette Sport wrote a recap with the following headline.

“I-WA VICT-RY”

Notice the O’s are missing because there was absolutely zero offense in Iowa’s win on Saturday. The Hawkeyes had only one drive go longer than 30 yards while 11 went for less than 10 yards.

In all, Iowa finished with final stat line of 10 punts, two turnovers, and a missed field goal. Not ideal.

Luckily, the defense was stellar, holding South Dakota State to just 120 total yards and six first downs. The Jackrabbits averaged just two yards per play and, like Iowa, were held out of the endzone all afternoon.

This headline was the perfect way to describe the season opening win. Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, it’s a title that might get used again based on this uninspiring performance.
