‘Is a hot dog a sandwich?’ is one of the internet’s favorite questions. More often than not, people being asked this question have never stopped to really think about their answers. And then there are people who spend exhausting amounts of time pondering the hot dog x sandwich conundrum.

I’ve seen hot dogs described as tacos because the buns connect underneath (like a taco shell) and both would be laid flat. Some people maintain that a hot dog IS a sandwich. While others, myself included, insist that a hot dog is a hot dog. It’s a unique entity. Then there’s this dude at the end of the video below claiming a hot dog is a hamburger and that’s got me thinking too.

This clip came from the Reese’s Senior Bowl where the Detroit Lions set up a camera to ask players if a hot dog is a sandwich. We’ve all seen people asked this question before but somehow this is the best version of this question we’ve seen yet.

Is A Hot Dog A Hamburger? Is It A Sandwich?

We can say for certain that hot dog is not a hamburger because there’s a pretty clear definition of what a hamburger is: “a round patty of ground beef, fried or grilled and typically served on a bun or roll and garnished with various condiments.” Hot dogs are not served as a patty. Conversation over.
