University of Texas at San Antonio head football coach Jeff Traylor may have dropped the best “back in my day” analogy of all time.

Speaking to the press over the weekend, the 55-year-old Traylor — who has been the head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners since 2020 — lamented the fact that kickers and punters no longer smoke and drink like they used to back in his day.

Why? Because you “can’t do any of that fun stuff” anymore, according to Traylor.

“Back in the day they just smoked cigarettes and drank beers, all the kickers and punters did. But I know you can’t do that anymore in America. Can’t do any of that fun stuff,” Traylor said.

It’s unclear, exactly, if Traylor meant smoking and drinking on the field a la Len Dawson and John Madden, or just in general in their private lives. It’s also a mystery as to why Traylor specifically thinks this is a special teams issue. Perhaps he doesn’t even want to imagine the likes of his quarterback and wide receivers getting wavy.

Furthermore, just because Traylor doesn’t see it happening doesn’t mean it ceases to exist. His punters are probably ripping their vapes during team meetings, blowing fat clouds right under his nose. Plus, regardless of how much our culture may be regressing, if there’s one thing that’s true about college kids, it’s that they’ll always drink, which then usually leads to them becoming “only when I’m drunk smokers.”

Before he became the head coach at UTSA, Traylor was the assistant head coach and running backs coach at the University of Arkansas from 2018 to 2019. Prior to that, he held those same positions at SMU in 2017 and was the Special Teams Coordinator and tight ends coach at the University of Texas from 2015 to 2016.

Traylor, however, originally made a name for himself in high school football, as he coached at Gilmer High School in Texas for 14 years from 2000 to 2014, winning three state championships.
