Jerry Stackhouse likely won’t end up in the Basketball Hall of Fame. But his 18-year NBA career was still pretty darn impressive. The Philadelphia 76ers selected Stackhouse with the third overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft (two spots ahead of Kevin Garnett, oof). Stackhouse then played 2.5 seasons in Philly before being traded to the Detroit Pistons, where he became an All-Star caliber player.

Following his lengthy career, Stackhouse went into coaching. He became the head coach of the Toronto Raptors’ G League affiliate in 2016 and won the league’s Coach of the Year award a year later. Around that time, Stackhouse was considered one of the NBA’s top coaching prospects.

That never came to fruition. Instead, Stackhouse to the head coaching position at Vanderbilt University in 2019. The Commodores are far from a powerhouse. But they made the NCAA Tournament on 2016 and 2017 under coaches Kevin Stallings and Bryce Drew.

Unfortunately, Drew had the team going in the wrong direction before being fired following the 2018-19 season where Vandy went just 9-23.

Stackhouse has found it difficult to rebuild the once-successful program. He went 20-36 over his first two seasons. But the Commodores showed signs of life in 2021-22, going 19-17 and reaching the NIT quarterfinals.

That progression hasn’t seemed to translate to the new season, however, and it’s wearing on Stackhouse.

The ref immediately gave Stackhouse a pair of technicals of his own and ejected him from the game. Ultimately, Stackhouse had to be removed from the court by VCU campus police.

The Commodores lost the game, 70-65, and fell to 3-4 on the year. While Stackhouse’s seat just got a little warmer in an embarrassing fashion.
