Joel Dahmen Is Facing A Massive Beer Tab In Detroit Thanks To A Promise He Made In January

Joel Dahmen has recently emerged as a fan favorite on the PGA Tour thanks in no small part to the hurdles he’s managed to overcome while pursuing his dream to play golf for a living, and he’s cemented himself as a consummate Man of the People over the course of his journey.

After all, we’re talking about a guy who admitted to playing a round with a brutal hangover during his time on the Korn Ferry Tour and pulled out his wallet to give beer money to a fan he hit with a drive at a tournament earlier this year.

Dahmen’s current season has left a bit to be desired, and it doesn’t appear the pep talk he received from Ric Flair ahead of the U.S. Open had much of an impact when you consider he missed the cut at Los Angeles Country Club (he’s failed to qualify for the weekend in the past three events he’s played in).

The 35-year-old will have the chance to turn things around at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detriot Golf Club this week, and while he’s far from the favorite, he may have some extra incentive to finish near the top of the leaderboard thanks to a fairly pricey promise that’s come back to haunt him a bit.

Dahmen (who is a Washington native) is a Seattle Seahawks fan, and earlier this year, he promised to buy anyone who came to watch him play in Detroit a beer after the Lions beat the Packers to ensure his team would be punching their ticket to the NFL Playoffs.

On Tuesday, the Twitter account for the Rocket Mortgage Classic reminded Dahmen about the pledge, which resulted in the golfer inquiring about the price of beer at the event.

The account followed up with a photo that showed the cheapest beer available is being sold for $11.50, and while the PGA Tour doesn’t release attendance numbers, if we assume 10,000 spectators take Dahmen up on his offer, it would set him back over $100,000.

It’s worth noting the winner of the tournament will walk away with a check worth $1.584 million, which would certainly make that theoretical beer tab a bit easier to swallow for a man who has earned more than $10.5 million over the course of his career but would probably prefer to keep the cost as low as possible.
