Joel Embiid is the reigning NBA MVP.
The 29-year-old Cameroonian had a monster 2022-23 season, averaging a league-leading 33.1 points to go along with 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.7 blocks.
But all his accomplishments, Embiid has yet to go beyond the second round of the playoffs, nine years into his NBA career.
All of those years were spent with the Philadelphia 76ers, who selected Embiid with the third pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
Now, there are various reasons the Sixers have lost repeatedly in the second round. Some years Embiid was hurt. Some they didn’t put enough talent around him, and some they just downright fell apart.
Take, for instance, brutal series losses to the Atlanta Hawks (2021) and Boston Celtics (2023) where Philly had a seemingly clear path to the NBA Finals but Embiid and co. simply choked it away.
But the reasons are irrelevant. The fact it, Embiid wants to win a ring. And his chances of doing so in Philadelphia seem to be dwindling.
Even still, he’s never hinted with any dissatisfaction with the organization.
That is, until recently.
Embiid sat down with Uninterrupted’s Maverick Carter recently at the first annual UNINTERRUPTED Film Festival. The pair discussed the launch of his upcoming Miniature Géant Studio.
But they also talked basked. And that’s when Embiid said something that may make Sixers fans uneasy.
Was not expecting Joel Embiid to say “or anywhere else” when talking about championships… He’s close to his breaking point here in Philly. pic.twitter.com/0MqXX1rnrT

“I just wanna win a championship,” he says. “Whatever it takes…Whether it’s in Philly or anywhere else, I just wanna have a chance.”
It’s the “or anywhere else” that raised a lot of eyebrows.
Embiid’s current teammate James Harden recently requested a trade from the organization. And now it appears that Embiid is at least open to following him out the door at some point.
It sure sounds like Philadelphia general manager Daryl Morey now has a fire on his hands that he needs to put out.
