Oklahoma barely escaped with a win over New Mexico during the college football game on Saturday. John Mateer made an extremely awkward admission after the game.
He only knew one of his wide receivers was wide open for a touchdown because the crowd let him know.
An elite college football quarterback should not need help from the fans. That’s not something he should admit publicly.
Oklahoma fans want to fire offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle.
Fresh off a loss to Michigan, No. 24-ranked Oklahoma returned home on Saturday against a Group of Six opponent, New Mexico. The Sooners were 22.5-point favorites over the Lobos. They did not cover. They did not come anywhere close.
Oklahoma’s offense was dreadful. It gained only 61 yards on the ground, which was the lowest total in a regular-season game against a non-power conference opponent since 2008. The Sooners scored only 14 points, which was the fewest amount of points scored against a non-power conference opponent since 2005. Woof.
Fans called for offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to be fired. Brent Venables said after the game that will not happen.
The offensive line could not stop someone from getting out of a phone booth. The entire offense was slow and soft. Arbuckle knows it must be better in the coming weeks. Georgia is on the docket next weekend.
“It was really dirty and really sloppy. I can just tell you, I’m going to watch the film, and there’s going to be things that we can get a little bit cleaner on, we can be a little faster, a little bit more physical on, and that’s going to be the frustrating thing.”
Starting quarterback John Mateer did not help to inspire confidence. He struggled as both a passer and a runner.

A Heisman Trophy contender at the beginning of the season, John Mateer has not played well in back-to-back weeks. The loss to Michigan was one thing. An eight-point win over New Mexico is another. (Even if Jason Eck is an awesome coach for the Lobos!)

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh………. what?! A Division I, FBS quarterback on a top-25 team should not need the fans to let him know that one of his best weapons is that open. He should see an open receiver with his own two eyes. Not great.
