Jon Jones doesn’t think Islam Makhachev is the best fighter in the world.

Two weeks ago after beating Alex Volkanovski via a controversial decision win at UFC 284, Makhachev believes that he had surpassed Jones as the best fighter in the world.

“Jon Jones is a great fighter, of course. He’s the best, but last time he won a split decision, or he always has hard fights. I don’t know. I don’t think after [his] fight, he will be the best. I’m the best right now because I beat the best fighter in the world. This is why I think I deserve this. If somebody wants to be the best, I’m ready.”

During Wednesday’s UFC 285 media day, Jones said he believes Volkanovski did enough to retain the title of the best fighter in the world.

“Volkanovski has been very active, and I do believe he deserves to be the top fighter in the world… I think Volkanovski kept that title after a loss, well he deserves it, he’s refreshing…he represents the sport well”

Jones also says he didn’t care about the pound-for-pound rankings and is aiming to be the greatest fighter ever.

“I’m aiming to be the greatest fighter ever not the pound-for-pound best right now.”
