After putting on a strong showing in his last bout, Justin Gaethje already has plans set for a title shot.

He’s easily one of the most electric fighters in the UFC and he wants to keep the hype train going after calling for a rematch against Dustin Poirier.

Even so, the UFC star isn’t putting all of his eggs into one basket.

According to MMA Fighting, a potential fight between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier makes sense. Both guys are at the top of the lightweight division and currently are not booked for a bout.

For that reason, Gaethje believes the best matchup for him right now is to take on Poirier again.

These two went at it back in 2018, and that slugfest turned out to be one of the best fights in UFC history.

With how the lightweight division is aligning right now, Gaethje believes the best thing for the sport would be for him to fight Poirier later this year, per MMA Fighting.

“I think that’s the obvious answer. He’s No. 2, he has no dance partner, and the same with me. I think that fight is certainly a title contention fight.”

“The winner of [Charles] Oliveira and [Beneil] Dariush fight, obviously [they] are going to fight for the title in October, so I need to fight Dustin in August, September, or October to put me on that perfect timeline.”

It sure sounds like Justin Gaethje has it all planned out.

Nothing is official right now though. There is a chance that Poirier doesn’t even want to fight right now.

Gaethje acknowledges that by stating, “You can’t force anybody to fight. I’m not saying he doesn’t want to fight me, but he probably doesn’t need to ever fight again with how much money he’s made. So I don’t know. I think he’ll take it. Some people around me think he won’t take it. All I can do is focus on myself in that regard.”

So, we’ll see how it all unfolds. This is a rematch fight fans would love to see.
