Minor league baseball teams have a reputation for thinking outside the box when it comes to dreaming up ways to attract people to their games. That’s certainly the case with the Kalamazoo Growlers, which have proudly unleashed a gag-inducing concoction appropriately dubbed the “Skat Dog” onto an unsuspecting world.
It’s hard to envy the minor league baseball teams that need to think of ways to convince people to spend their hard-earned money and devote a few hours of their lives to attend a game between two teams that boast a roster of players they’ve probably never heard of.
The marketing departments at those clubs subsequently tend to be their most valuable asset, as they’re tasked with coming up with the various promotions that tend to litter the annual calendar in the hopes giveaways, firework shows, and other forms of entertainment will be enough to lure fans to the ballpark.
The Savannah Bananas have mastered the art of going viral (and made a ton of money in the process), but they’re far from the only squad that’s figured out how to use the internet to its advantage.
I’m going to assume most people reading this aren’t intimately familiar with the Kalamazoo Growlers, the reigning champions of the Northwoods League, a wood bat association that gives college players the chance to develop their skills over the summer.
The Growlers (who previously got some attention for trolling Ryan Day with a job offer after a loss to Michigan) play their home games at Homer Stryker Field, which features multiple concession stands serving up the grub you’d expect to find at a baseball game. However, they’ll also be serving up a very unconventional item during a handful of games this season.
On Tuesday, the Growlers unveiled a new offering that will be on the menu for the six home games they’ll play on Saturdays after the 2025 season kicks off at the end of May: the Skat Dog, a hot dog topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry tucked between a chocolate cake donut.
Each Skat Dog boasts 1,017 calories, and anyone who’s intrigued enough to try it will only have to fork over $10 for the honor.
Every day we stray further from God’s light.
