For the second year in a row, the Kansas Jayhawks football team pulled a massive upset to reach bowl eligibility and the goalposts ended up in the lake. It was absolute scenes in Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.
The game, which took much longer than expected due to a lengthy lightning delay in the first half, saw undefeated Oklahoma roll into town on the heels of a narrow victory over UCF. Brent Venables’ Sooners looked vulnerable, and a second week of inconsistent play led to their first loss of the season.
Kansas scored a touchdown with less than one minute left to claim the 38-33 victory.
51 weeks prior, the Jayhawks beat the Oklahoma State Cowboys to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2009. Fans stormed onto the field, tore down the goalposts, and threw them in Potter Lake.
Saturday, after beating the other Oklahoma team, was more of the same!
The sold-out crowd at Memorial Stadium poured onto the field as soon as the clock hit zero. Many of them beelined straight for the nearest field goal and, once again, ripped it down to the ground.
As soon as the goalposts were separated, the fans made their way out of the stadium and the trek to Potter Lake was on. It is less than a half a mile from from the field, so they got there quick!
It was not long after the goalposts arrived that they were thrown into the water.
This is apparently becoming an annual college football tradition in Lawrence. Kansas, under head coach Lance Leipold, continues to win big games when they matter most, at home.
A fanbase that was the butt of every joke for many, many years is finally relevant again. Their team is going to a bowl game in back-to-back years for just the second time in school history and first time in 15 years.
The celebration is well-deserved and no celebration is official until the goalposts are in Potter Lake!
