It’s been a few years since Spencer Strider emerged as one of the best young pitchers in baseball, but he’s struggled to pick up where he left off this season after returning from the injury that sidelined him for the bulk of the 2024 campaign. However, there’s one thing that’s remained the same: the massive legs that Keith Hernandez was enraptured by when the Braves played the Mets on Tuesday.
MLB players come in many shapes and sizes, and that’s especially true when it comes to the pitchers who can get away with rocking a wide variety of body types on the mound.
C.C. Sabathia and Bartolo Colon are some of the first names that spring to mind when it comes to guys who weren’t exactly worried about their weight when they were playing in the MLB, while Lanky Kings like Randy Johnson and Chris Sale have also managed to do pretty well for themselves while falling on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Pitchers obviously rely on their arm more than anything else when it comes to doing their job, but it would be foolish to overlook the amount of power your lower body helps generate when delivering from the mound.
Many baseball fans quickly noticed Braves hurler Spencer Strider definitely doesn’t skip leg day after he made his MLB debut in 2021.
The man who posted a 20-5 record as a starter in 2023 while posting a 3.86 ERA and striking out 281 batters has some absolutely massive thighs lurking underneath his uniform, and he’s said no one in the clubhouse can match the 500-plus lbs. split squat he’s capable of.

Strider underwent surgery for a torn UCL last April and sat out the rest of the season, and he’s had trouble getting things clicking after making his return in 2025 while going 3-5 and posting a 4.07 in the eight games he’s started so far.
However, his legs are looking as thicc as ever, and Mets analyst Keith Hernandez couldn’t stop himself from fawning over the “big oaks” that caught his attention during the second inning of Tuesday night’s showdown between Atlanta and New York.

Strider’s legs helped propel the Braves to a 7-4 victory in a game where he surrendered two runs and three hits while striking out eight in five innings of work.
