The Kentucky basketball program lost out on the Tyran Stokes sweepstakes this past Tuesday. The 5-star prospect chose Kansas over the Wildcats.
The whiff was an embarrassing one for Mark Pope and Co. They were completely out of the loop while desperately chasing a lost recruit.
On top of the miss, the coaching staff committed a rules violation on the day of Stokes’ commitment. It wasn’t a great look.
Who is Tyran Stokes?
The 5-star forward is the top-ranked basketball recruit in the country. He currently plays for Rainier High School in Seattle, Washington where he shined as a senior.
That came after a surprise transfer from Notre Dame ahead of his final season. Stokes mysteriously withdrew from school days before the 2025 campaign. Disciplinary issues were said to be at the root of the transfer.
The move did little to impact production. He scored 31 points in his debut with the Vikings. Two months later, he scored 63 points in a game against West Seattle.
Given the production, his recruitment was one that was high-profile. He held offers from every college in the country. Ultimately, his choice came down to Kentucky and Kansas.
The forward unveiled that decision on national television Tuesday. The Jayhawks were the pick.
Kentucky basketball whiffed.
Mark Pope and his staff believed they had a shot at landing Tyran Stokes. They pulled out all the stops while pumping hope into the fanbase. They were not in touch with reality.
Stokes took a visit to Lexington last weekend. KSR reports that he began the process of signing his non-revenue paperwork with Kansas while on Kentucky’s campus.
Sources told KSR+ that around the time of Stokes’ Kentucky visit, he was in the process of signing non-revenue share paperwork with the Kansas Jayhawks.
The visit, reportedly, went poorly. Pope made the desperate effort of hiring Stokes’s high school assistant coach Jamal Crawford on staff. That, too, failed.
“Kentucky real life did offer Jamal (Crawford) a job though.”

Kansas was always the favorite to land Tyran Stokes. The Wildcats tried all they could to convince him to change his mind.
The optics painted a picture of desperation and disconnect, themes that have followed Kentucky. Recruiting misses piling up for Mark Pope.
The icing on the cake in this instance was a potential recruiting violation.
Did Kentucky break the rules?

Assistant Mo Williams, in a now-deleted response on X, replied directly to a social media message from Stokes. While minor, it is a violation.
In 2016, the NCAA changed rules related to online interaction with recruits. Likes and retweets are allowed. Public replies are not.
“Type, but don’t text,” is the rule of thumb. Williams didn’t follow that mantra.
Had Stokes revealed that he’d already begun the process of signing with Kansas, it might’ve prevented the infraction. Kentucky had already lost the battle!
It was a fitting end to the saga. The Wildcats were oblivious to every aspect of the recruitment, from gauging interest to compliance with the NCAA rulebook.
Tyran Stokes will now take his talents to Kansas. Kentucky will need to find a replacement.
