Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant both left organizations in order to team up in Brooklyn.

Durant left Golden State, where he won two NBA titles. Irving departed from Boston, and not on the best terms with the fanbase. Their reasoning for leaving?

To win an NBA title as a duo.

Unfortunately, things haven’t worked out as planned. Irving was forced into being a part-time player this year with New York City’s vaccination mandate. Durant went down midseason with an injury.

The result was a seventh-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings.

Still, the Nets had a chance to turn things around in the postseason. They won a play-in game to set up a first-round matchup with Boston. The Irving-Celtics storyline was made for television. With both Durant and Irving on the floor full-time, it also seemed like Brooklyn’s chance to make a surprise run.

Boston made quick work of the Nets, though, sweeping with four straight wins. And now, to add insult to injury, both Durant and Irving’s old teams are squaring off in the NBA Finals while they sit at home.

An absolutely brutal look, now Boston and Golden State are matching up in the NBA Finals. Durant and Irving fell well short of their championship aspirations, and now, they’ll be left watching the teams they once played for compete for a title.

And if things don’t change in a hurry for Brooklyn, it could be the end of the Durant, Irving era altogether. It’s certainly not played out the way they’d envisioned when teaming up a few years ago.
