Providence head coach Kim English was ecstatic after a Big East Tournament upset over eighth-ranked Creighton on Thursday, a win that potentially lands his team a spot in the Big Dance.

At 21-12, the Friars are on the cusp, sitting in the “First Four Out” in Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology update. But while he was eager to elaborate on the victory in his postgame press conference, he ended up being hit with the most awkward of questions.

“Are you single?”

Yes, a reporter in the audience decided it the time to ask about the head coach’s marital status rather than gain insight on the win over Creighton.

“No comment,” Kim English responded to the bizarre ask, wanting to get back to the topic at hand.

After seeing the conversation go viral, many were quick to comment online. A number of social media users took the moment to rip the reporter.

“How embarrassing that in March, during a press conference after one of the most important wins of the season, this is the question.”

“This is REALLY inappropriate. The reporter should lose their credential.”

“Because that’s what I would want to ask him after he just upset the No. 2 seed and No. 8 team in the country.”

“Cringe.”

“I’d hope said ‘reporter’ has had their pass revoked.”

While the question was obviously asked in a playful manner, it probably wasn’t the time or place. The result was an extremely awkward interaction, though the head coach did his best to get the presser back on the rails.

As for Kim English, it appears he’s been married at some point, though his Providence bio only points to his two children. That should be the least of sports journalists’ concerns with the Friars looking to make some noise in March.
