When it comes to college athletes getting paid for their name, image, and likeness most people fall into one of two categories. Either you love seeing student-athletes finally make money off of their own name and image, or you think that NIL deals are ruining college athletics.

There’s really no in-between when it comes to opinions on NIL, which is interesting given the fact that the vast majority of people wanted to see college athletes be paid as they generate millions of dollars for their universities.

Kirby Smart, who is fresh off of leading his Georgia Bulldogs to a national title, has a unique concern about NIL and the state of college football as a whole.

In the very recent past, Smart explained that he was excited for NIL, but given the fact that college football has turned into the wild wild west, he’s concerned.

Kirby Smart Gets Honest About The State Of College Football

You’ve most definitely heard the adage that college football has turned into the wild wild west over the last year or so, and it’s true. Certain players are earning millions of dollars, plus you add the transfer portal to the mix and the landscape of the whole sport is constantly changing.

Smart seems to think that given the uncertainties in college football at the moment the sport could lose a lot of its premier coaches to the NFL.

“It worries me, I’ll be real honest with you, where the game of college football is going,” Smart explained to Rece Davis. “First concern I have: the best leaders and the best men to run it and be organized with it are leaving. Because you said relentless, the best coaches are going to the NFL because they get more time with their families.

“They want no part of NIL, portal, constant recruiting. And you say, ‘Well, why not?’ Go live it and see how long you wanna do it. It’s not what it used to be and I see coaches left and right, you know a lot of them, that have stepped out of this game that are saying, ‘I’m done.’”

Smart voicing these concerns as the head coach of the national championship-winning team, with essentially endless funds at his disposal, tells you all you need to know about the state of college football.
