The Arizona Cardinals have improved under head coach Kliff Kingsbury each season for the three years he’s been there. However, given his horrid late-season record and the Cardinals getting beat down by the Los Angeles Rams in the opening round of the playoffs on Monday night, many are questioning if he’s the right guy in Arizona.

At the midway point of the NFL regular season, the Cardinals looked like the best team in the league as they sat at 8-1. If the season ended then, Kingsbury would have been named NFL Coach of the Year, but then things spiraled.

Kyler Murray missing time certainly didn’t help things, nor did DeAndre Hopkins’ absence, but going 3-5 after an 8-1 start and losing five of your last six games overall is flat-out embarrassing.

At the end of the day, Kingsbury is of course just a coach, his players have to go out and execute, but he absolutely deserves blame here for Arizona’s collapse.

Kliff Kingsbury Is No Stranger To Late-Season Collapses

Last season the Cardinals started the year 6-3, went 2-5 in their last seven games, and missed out on the playoffs. This season the Cards held a two-game lead in the NFC West with five games left to play, went 1-5 over their last six, and then got humiliated by the Rams in the Wild Card round.

Before taking over in Arizona, Kingsbury spent six years as the head coach at Texas Tech, and it was the same story there.

The Red Raiders would routinely get off to hot starts and then stumble mightily down the stretch. The latter half of Tech’s schedule was never too friendly, but Kingsbury was still unable to keep things going in the right direction late in the year.

Kingsbury has never had a winning record on the back half of the schedule.

Given the fact that he’s just 9-17 in the latter half of the schedule as the Cardinals’ head coach, many are suggesting that Arizona should fire him.
