Leading up to Kylian Mbappe’s sport-shifting decision between staying at PSG or leaving for Real Madrid, most assumed that the French superstar would leave the Paris club for the Spanish giant. So, when he announced his decision to stay with PSG, it sent shockwaves through the sport.

Soccer fans around the real, especially those that support Real Madrid, had one simple question after his decision: why?

Real Madrid has tried to sign Mbappe since he was just 11-years-old, this time around it felt like he was Madrid’s to lose, and lose it did.

The 23-year-old is now the highest-paid soccer player on the planet after receiving a three-year contract, with a net salary of €57 million per season, with bonuses that could fetch  €300 million over the three years of the contract.

Money played a role, as it always does, but Real Madrid undoubtedly offered him a nearly identical contract, if not a richer one.

PSG offered him something Real Madrid couldn’t, however, and those are the “keys” to the club.

According to ESPN’s Julien Laurens, Mbappe essentially has majority control of PSG.

“PSG have given him the “keys” to the club. He will have — and already has had — his say on the choice of manager, sporting director and probably players on the squad, too. Mbappe wanted to be the face, the head and the heart of the PSG project, and they’ve cleared a path so he can be just that.”

Being handed the keys to one of the biggest clubs in the world that just so happens to be in your hometown of Paris, is a rather large perk for a 23-year-old.
