We know LeBron James will be returning for his 24th season in the NBA, but it’s currently unclear what team he’ll be playing for. He doesn’t seem to be in any rush to reveal his decision, and he reportedly opted to drag it out more than he intended to get some petty revenge on Adam Silver over the commissioner’s comments about his impact on the schedule.
There was some speculation LeBron James would decide to call it quits after the conclusion of the most recent NBA season. However, it was a bit hard to imagine that was going to be the case when you consider it ended with the Lakers being swept in the second round of the playoffs to cap off a campaign where he averaged over 20 points per game.
At the end of June, we learned what is already the longest career in NBA history will get even longer after James confirmed he’ll be returning for at least one more ride while announcing it would not be with the Lakers.
That kicked off a cyclone of rumors that continues to swirl as the basketball world awaits the result of The Decision 5.0, and it sounds like that whirlwind could have ceased earlier this month if it wasn’t for Adam Silver’s ability to inadvertently irk one of the greatest players of all time.
LeBron James reportedly postponed his decision after Adam Silver complained about its impact on the NBA’s schedule
Last week, Silver appeared on CNBC and suggested LeBron’s decision to take his time when it came to picking his next destination was causing some headaches when it came to firming up the schedule for next season, saying, “I need him to make a decision.”
It would be easy to view that comment as complimentary, as Silver was essentially saying a man who will turn 42 years old next season is still impactful to the point where the league is willing to wait to see where he ends up before it locks in the matchups for premiere slots like Opening Night and Christmas.
However, based on what Andy Baskin of Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan had to say on Wednesday, LeBron interpreted Silver’s remark as one designed to put unnecessary pressure on him and took exception to the point where he decided to delay the reveal of the team he’d already settled on by that point.
“Here’s what I was told yesterday by a reliable source. Last week, LeBron’s crew was probably ready to make an announcement. ‘Irritated’ was the word I was told, by the commissioner pushing them…so they decided to hold back.”

It’s the definition of a Power Move but also one that seems unnecessarily petty and largely pointless at this point in his career (Baskin did note the decision to push the announcement may not have been LeBron’s alone but rather the consensus of his “crew”).
If deleted YouTube videos are to be believed, the Heat are currently the top contenders to land James, but there’s currently no telling how long we’re going to have to wait to see who wins the sweepstakes.
