In case you somehow haven’t noticed, Lionel Messi has taken the football world by storm since joining Inter Miami.

Previously among the worst teams in Major League Soccer, Inter Miami has won three straight games (albeit in the Leagues Cup and not MLS play) with Messi scoring five goals across those matches.

And while Messi’s goals are obviously racking up millions of views across the world, it’s actually his celebrations that appear to be getting the most attention.

Following Inter Miami’s 4-0 win over Atlanta United, his wife Antonela Roccuzzo confirmed that his celebration was a reference to Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Then, during Inter’s 3-1 win over Orlando City SC on Wednesday, August 2, Messi busted out what’s clearly a Wakanda Forever celebration, which you can see in the photo at the top of this article.

This has led football fans to ask the obvious question: why? Does Messi associate America with Marvel in the same way he does things like baseball and cheeseburgers? Or, perhaps, is there something monetary-related going on behind the scenes?

The evidence seems to point to the latter, as Twitter sleuths have uncovered a flashy new Marvel-themed ball that’s being released by adidas, the company that sponsors Messi.

The ball, called the Marvel MLS All-Star Pro Ball, is currently on sale on the adidas website for $170.

Messi’s next match for Inter Miami will come on Sunday, August 6 in another Leagues Cup match against FC Dallas. Then, on August 20, he’ll make his debut in an official MLS match against Charlotte FC.

Widely considered to be the greatest football player of all time, Messi joined Inter Miami earlier this summer following two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain in France. The halcyon days of his career, of course, came during his 17 years with Barcelona, which saw him score 474 goals in 520 appearances.
