The PGA Tour released major news on Wednesday morning, kind of. They announced the inaugural ‘TGL season’ would debut in 2024, and it’s being described as ‘an innovative golf league’ that is ‘fusing advanced tech and live action in primetime’.

TGL will be headlined by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. It will feature six teams of 3 PGA Tour players competing in some sort of custom built arena that “will combine a data-rich virtual course with a state-of-the-art short game complex.” There will surely be huge paychecks attached. But that’s all we really know about it at this point.

The PGA Tour x TGL announcement came at roughly 10:30 am EST. Not to be outdone, LIV Golf announced an absolute rager 90 minutes later. LIV Golf does big parties and live concerts at every LIV Golf Invitational and instead of playing second fiddle to the TGL news they swooped in to tell the world they got Diplo and others.

LIV Golf Responds To PGA Tour’s TGL News By Announcing A Massive Party

Diplo, St. Lucia, and Dalton & The Sheriffs will headline the LIV Golf Invitational Boston.

Love or hate LIV Golf, you have to respect the pettiness of following up a big PGA Tour announcement with ‘well, we got Diplo’ 90 minutes later.

The 11-time Grammy-nominated Diplo will headline the LIV Golf Invitational Boston weekend over September 2-4 at The International. Thomas Wesley Pentz aka Diplo will perform on Sunday, September 4 at the conclusion of the event. Kids 15 and under get in free according to the LIV Golf website. Active duty military members and veterans will also get into the LIV Golf concert for free.

Is golf no longer about golf?

There are a lot of complaints on Twitter about the LIV Golf concerts. Some of them are valid and some of them are just noise.

These events do feel a bit like ‘Entertainment 720’ from NBC’s Parks & Rec, the company that Tom Haverford/Aziz Ansari ran into the ground by outrageous spending…

I feel like all the people on Twitter making fun of LIV Golf for putting on concerts aren’t really traveling to many PGA Tour events.

Brad Paisley and .38 Special will headline the QBE Shootout in Naples, FL in December. The Waste Management Open puts on the ‘Concert in the Coliseum’ calling it ‘The Greatest Show on Grass.’

I get the criticisms of the LIV Tour but people making fun of there being concerts attached to tournaments seem to be living under a rock.
