LPGA star Charley Hull is one of the tour’s most popular women, largely because she always keeps it 100. She is very much in the mold of another popular golfer in that way, John Daly.

Case in point: Hull recently shared a story that sounded like something John Daly would have told.

Charley Hull almost got a most regrettable tattoo at age 17

Charley Hull shared how, at the age of 17, she was on the verge of getting a tattoo across her forehead after a crazy, drunken night of partying in Ibiza, but her friend luckily intervened to save her.

“I’ve got three tattoos,” Hull revealed to Golfweek during a Q&A session. “I’ve got one on my foot. I got drunk when I was in Ibiza when I was 17 years old.

“Me and my friend James went out partying. I was coming back from the club, and I thought it would be a great idea to get a tattoo across my head, because me and my best mate, James, our favorite thing we always said to each other was ‘Hold tight, hold tight.’

“He wouldn’t let me get it on my forehead,” Hull continued. “Instead, I got it on my foot and it says, hold tight. He got a matching one on his arm.

“We went back to the hotel, woke in the morning hung over, and I went to James, ‘Bloody hell, was I that drunk last night? I walked back with a plastic bag on my foot.’ He said, ‘No, Charlie. That’s the wrapping after you’ve had your tattoo.’ I was like, ‘What? I got a tattoo?’ He said, ‘Yeah, you were trying to get it on your forehead and we had to stop you there.’

“So yeah, I’ve got one tattoo there,” Hull added. “I’ve got one of my ex-husband’s name on my wrist, which I’ve tried to get removed. And then me and [my best friend Georgia Hall] have matching lightning bolts. Mine is on my right pinky. We always do pinky promises with each other like that. And she’s got the same one.”

Charley Hull says she has found a replacement for smoking cigarettes

Another similarity that Charley Hull shares with John Daly is that she is one of the very, very few golfers fans have seen smoking cigarettes while playing a round on tour. Notably, she lit up while competing in the 2024 Solheim Cup. That is something she says she has been trying to change.

She said that her father, who is currently 75-years-old, smoked 40 cigarettes a day since he was around 10-years-old. She actually detested cigarettes and smoking as a child.

“We used to make bets if I got down to a scratch handicap, he would stop smoking, and I got down to scratch one day, and then, I think, two days later, I was off like +1,” she said. “So, he started smoking again, and I was fuming, because, obviously, he said, when I got down to scratch, but not when I got down to plus figures. But my whole family are all smokers, my nephew smokes, he’s six years younger than me.”

Charley Hull said that, being from England, smoking is more common there.

“I was just stressed a couple years ago, so I got, prescribed Xanax,” she said. “And I felt like I was going to get addicted to them, so, I chucked them straight in the bin, and I just needed something to ease me a little bit.

“And so, that’s why I started vaping, and then I felt like I was vaping too much. You can vape inside, you can vape anywhere. So, that’s why I started smoking. I thought at least when I have a cigarette I can go outside, and I’m not gonna do it inside, and then, I slowly got off them, and that’s why I’m on the nicotine pouches now.”
