Zach Loboy was fired as the varsity high school football coach at Marist Catholic in Oregon. An tangible reason for this mid-season ouster has not been announced by the school.
However, it reportedly stems from a blowout win on Friday.
The Spartans high school football program won by too many points. They did not show mercy toward their opponent.
Zach Loboy was fired as the high school football coach.
Marist Catholic High School is a private college preparatory school located in Eugene, Oregon. Founded in 1968, it enrolls less than 450 students in Grades 9-12. The Spartans compete in Class 4A, Special District 3 of the OSAA. They are members of the Sky Em League.
Marist reached the state championship game during its first season with Charlie Landegraf as head coach in 2023. And then Landegraf left to take the head coaching job at Central Catholic in Portland. Enter Zach Loboy.
The former defensive coordinator was elevated to head coach in 2024. The Spartans went undefeated to win the state championship in a rematch against the reigning champions during his first year at the helm. It was a great success.
Last season did not go as well. Marist Catholic finished under .500 at 4-6. This season is off to a similar start.
The Spartans currently sit at 3-3 through the first six games. They suffered a double overtime loss in Week 2 and a three-point loss in week four. It’s not like they started 0-6. And yet, Loboy was still fired.
KVAL/CBS13 was able to confirm the ouster on Tuesday. Loboy was removed from his position as head varsity football coach, effective immediately. The school determined “a change in leadership was necessary to reflect its mission and values.”
Jake Lowther will take over as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. He joined the staff this season after previously serving as a varsity assistant coach at Cascade High School.
Marist Catholic says its priority is to support its athletes, to maintain a positive team environment and to help the team finish the season strong. It also thanked the players and their families for their understanding and support during the coaching transition.
Marist Catholic ran up the score in violation of the honor code.
The private Catholic high school alluded to the potential issue with its head football coach in its statement. Zach Loboy was fired because his tenure with the program did not “reflect its mission and values.”
According to Mid-Major Media, a dominant win over Cottage Grove was the proverbial nail in the coffin. The Oregon-based media group claims Loboy was fired because he ran up the score. It got ugly. And he did not take his foot off of the gas.
The Spartans won the game by a final score of 63-0. They even attempted an onside kick while up 57-0.
Marist Catholic determined that Loboy’s aggressive coaching went against the school’s code of conduct. The code of conduct violation led to his ouster. He was fired because he ran up the score.
