Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has earned over $408 million during his NFL career. If he completes his current contract, he will have earned over $504 million. So why does he have a California state tax lien for $534,453.67 against him for the 2024 tax year?
According to Page Six, the California Franchise Tax Board filed a state tax lien against Matthew Stafford on July 14. Also, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk told the media outlet at the time of its report that it is currently active.
The Staffords’ present and future property rights may be subject to the state tax lien. The Staffords may also incur interest and fees if they do not pay the debts.
Stafford has made significant real estate investments in Southern California since the Detroit Lions traded him to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, according to Page Six. After spending $10.5 million on property near their current home, he and his wife Kelly reportedly paid $28.15 million for a Hidden Hills estate in 2023. In June, the couple sold three additional Hidden Hills residences for a total of $21.3 million.
Strange financial stories have been popping up around the NFL
It was reported on Monday that another California-based NFL player, Trent Williams of the San Francisco 49ers, who has career earnings of $218 million, is being sued for allegedly failing to make payments on a 2018 Porsche 911 since 2021. Williams allegedly made only two bank debit payments, totaling $10,617.26, before closing the account and has not made any payments since.
The car company that leased him the Porsche says Trent Williams owes $244,199.28 in past-due lease payments, along with fees and penalties, plus additional charges including attorneys’ fees and litigation costs.
It is bizarre financial stories like these that have caused football fans to raise their eyebrows at the sight of 21-year-old Arizona Cardinals rookie Jeremiyah Love buying his girlfriend a Lamborghini Urus, which costs between $234,000 and $338,000, when he hasn’t even played a game in the NFL yet.
