Early Sunday morning, the USWNT was eliminated from the Women’s World Cup after they failed to defeat Sweden in penalty kicks.

The loss marked the earliest exit in World Cup history for Team USA. Now, superstar Megan Rapinoe finally breaks her silence about the loss.

Heading into the tournament, it was well known Megan Rapinoe was planning on retiring from soccer at the conclusion of the World Cup.

However, she clearly hoped for a deep run in the tournament. USWNT ended up losing 5-4 in penalty kicks, as Rapinoe missed her attempt.

According to The Athletic, Rapinoe was upset with the loss. Team USA failed to continue in the biggest tournament in the world all thanks to her miss during the penalty kicks. Here’s what she had to say.

“This is like a sick joke for me, personally. I’m like, ‘this is dark comedy.’ I missed a penalty. This is the balance to the beautiful side of the game.”

It truly is an ugly way to go out. Especially considering she’s been a superstar player for USWNT throughout her career.

I mean, Megan Rapinoe has two World Cup wins under her belt. She’s a legend of the sport no matter how you look at it.

But sometimes things just don’t go your way, and that was certainly the case for Rapinoe and the USWNT this year.

At the end of the day, Rapinoe should hold her head high, as she’s had an illustrious career in sports. But she might be thinking of that penalty kick for a while.
