Star linebacker Dre Greenlaw went down with a non-contact injury in Super Bowl LVIII while running off the sidelines. The bizarre setback ended his night on an unfortunate note.

Greenlaw tore his Achilles in that moment, effectively removing him from the San Francisco defensive lineup. Mic’d up footage from the sidelines shows how gutted his 49ers teammates were to see him go down.

Early in the second quarter, the Niners were stopped on a third-down play to set up a fourth-and-long. The punt team came on, with Mitch Wishnowsky booting a 51-yard kick to pin the Chiefs back.

Gunners delivered a big hit on the return man to hold Kansas City to no gain.

Pumped about the stop and the opportunity to get back out on the field, Dre Greenlaw attempted to run off the sidelines before falling to the ground.

You could see something wasn’t right in that first few steps. As he tried to plant his leg in the ground, it gave out.

Fans in attendance, as well as the CBS broadcast crew, were devastated upon seeing the injury. Greenlaw has proven to be one of the best defenders in the NFL.

Over the lasts two years, he’s tallied 247 tackles, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and a touchdown. San Francisco also held Kansas City scoreless in the quarter-plus that the linebacker was on the field.

We heard the initial booth reaction to Greenlaw’s injury on Super Bowl Sunday, and now, we have the response from mic’d up players.

The reaction starts with Patrick Mahomes, who says, “57 is down,” before taking the field on offense.

The rest of the clip is from the San Francisco point of view.

Kyle Shanahan was in disbelief.

“Did Dre really get hurt running out on the field?”

George Kittle simply said, “That’s depressing.”

The 49ers would go on to lose the game, 25-22 in overtime. Greenlaw’s status for the start of the 2024 season could now be in jeopardy.
