A lot of people have been wondering what the future of Airbnb looks like in the coming months and years. Millions of people worldwide have been relying on those short-term rental properties for income and that well dried up overnight.

Travel cancellations in American cities for March and April ranged between 76% to 100% according to RentCafe which isn’t at all surprising, to be honest. A report on Realtor suggests many of these Airbnb properties which previously rented for a few days at a time are now listed for months with the property owners trying to secure long-term rentals. This might be to target people fleeing cities like New York for several months or it might suggest Airbnb owners are desperate to recover some lost income (or all the above).

I spent some time browsing Airbnb over the long weekend to see what’s available within driving distance and it shocking to see how dramatically the inventory has changed in the past few months. And despite seeing some awesome properties in the Florida Keys I didn’t see anything close to this frickin’ baseball stadium available for rent in Pensacola.

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are a Double-A Minor League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins (previously the Cincinnati Reds). They play their games at the Admiral Fetterman Field in Pensacola’s multi-use Community Maritime Park and have a gorgeous waterfront view of Pensacola Bay.

The team listed their stadium on Airbnb for $1,500 and are offering fans ‘The Ultimate Baseball Experience’. Naturally, it sold out immediately. Here’s what fans get for $1,500:

A Florida team is selling people the “ultimate baseball experience” by putting their oceanview stadium up for rent on AirBnB for $1,500 a night.

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos say guests will have access to the clubhouse, a large bedroom, the batting cage and the field.

“Guests are welcome to hit from home plate, play catch in the outfield, run the bases, enjoy a picnic in the outfield, or find other creative uses for the field,” the listing said.

And although the listing had no reviews, the stadium has been fully booked through July.

The team said on a Facebook post that it was waiting to hear more on the schedule for the 2020 season from league officials before opening more dates for vacation rentals between July and October. (via TampaBayTimes)

The listing is available for 10 guests and you can check it out here on Airbnb. It says there is 1 bedroom, 10 beds (4 bunk beds, 2 queen beds), 3 shared baths, and free cancellation for 48 hours before the booking which seems unrealistic for something like this.

It’s unclear when there will be a Minor League Baseball season in the Southern League. It seems like every minor league worldwide is waiting to see what the pros do before even trying to proceed. But if the professional leagues resume then there would certainly be a need for the minor leagues to resume and keep that feeder system of the sport’s next generation of athletes alive.

I’d be legitimately shocked if minor league teams didn’t start using their stadiums across the country for things like this. They have the ability to do safe/spread out concerts, cookouts, slip-n-slide days, movie nights on the jumbotron, and pretty much every other available safe activity for large groups. It doesn’t have to be $1,500/night for a sleepover, they can still make a ton of money this Summer without selling baseball tickets if they get savvy.
