The Egypt national team secured their first-ever World Cup win on Sunday night with a 3-1 victory over New Zealand. The win puts Egypt on four points after two games, which puts them atop their group and should be enough to see them through to the knockout rounds.
After the win, the Egyptian national team — led by team captain Mohamed Salah, who scored the go-ahead goal and had an assist en route to being named Player of the Match — took to the streets of Vancouver to celebrate with their fans after the historic win.

Through the first two matches of the group stage, Salah — a free agent after terminating the final year of his contract with Liverpool — already has three goal contributions: two assists and a goal.
“It’s incredible. I don’t know how to express it in words. It’s a great achievement for all the players, for the staff, so hopefully we can carry on like this in the group, and we can write history and qualify – and in years to come it will be remembered as one the best achievements in the history [of Egyptian football]. We have to enjoy today, enjoy tomorrow, then focus on the next game,” Salah said after the win.

In the current 48-team World Cup format, the eight best third-place teams qualify for the knockout stage (the Round of 32). With 4 points on the board, Egypt have likely secured qualification to the knockouts — should they beat Iran on Matchday 3, they’ll win their group. The winner of Group G plays the third-place team from Group A, E, H, I or J in Seattle on Wednesday, July 1.
