With the 2022 Winter Olympics officially wrapping up this past weekend, Naomi Osaka took some time to reflect on her own Olympic experience during the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Osaka, who lost in the third round of the 2020 Olympics, took to Instagram to let her 2.8 million followers that she “regrets” not enjoying most of her time in Tokyo. She admitted to feeling “a deep sense of sadness” as well.

“I realized that I had regrets about the whole experience, (not the torch lighting though that was [fire emoji] literally), there was a deep sense of sadness for not having more fun for the time I was there. Can’t believe I was at the Olympics in Tokyo and I failed to consistently find the immense joy in that,” Osaka wrote.

“I think that’s gonna be really important in my life going forward, just enjoying the experiences and making the most out of the time no matter how short or long it is.”

Osaka Was Amid A Media Boycott

Osaka’s appearance in the 2020 Games was her first after taking a two-month mental break amid her boycott of the media.

Following her loss, Osaka initially decided to continue her media blackout but later returned to the press room to answer a few questions. The now 24-year-old said that the pressure of making her Olympic debut in her home country of Japan was “a bit much.”

Osaka’s media boycott began at the French Open after explaining she gets “really nervous” during press conferences, which she describes as “stressful.” Later on at Wimbledon, Osaka cited that she was dealing with depression and anxiety battles.
