In the 150th season of college football, one of the oldest and most storied rivalies also celebrates its 120th anniversary: Army vs. Navy.

To celebrate, the 2019 Midshipmen, who are currently 9-2 and ranked 23rd in the nation and are looking to bring the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy back to Annapolis, will be wearing special throwback uniforms designed by Under Armour in honor of Navy’s Heisman Trophy winners Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach.

With 139 years of college football history, there are few programs in the country who boast richer traditions than Navy, yet the 1960s era of Navy football in particular sticks out. From 1960-63, Navy posted a 30-12 record, went 4-0 against Army, was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country and played in both the Orange and Sugar Bowls. Navy produced two Heisman Trophy winners during that time with Joe Bellino winning the award in 1960 and Roger Staubach in 1963.

The uniforms they wore featured a traditional navy blue contrasted with brilliant gold accents, a brilliant look for some of the best teams in the nation during their respective seasons. This era provided the appropriate inspiration needed to outfit the current Midshipmen squad for Saturday’s rivalry game.

Each helmet shell was custom painted to combine the likeness of the 1960s Navy Football headpiece and the bronze texture of the Heisman Trophy. The front displays the numbers 12 and 27, representing Navy football’s two Heisman Trophy winners, Staubach and Bellino, respectively.

Navy’s own gave also gave insider’s perspective into the making of the throwback 2019 Army-Navy uniform.

“All the memories come flooding back when you see a uniform like that,” said Admiral Tom Lynch, C. 1962-64.
