While Bill Belichick may be calling today (the day he and the Patriots make their parting of ways official) a day of “gratitude and celebration,” there are football fans all across the country who are happily dancing on his grave. Especially in New York.

Not letting Belichick leave Boston without one final jab, NBC New York (channel 4) reminded everyone that he lost two Super Bowls to the New York Giants in their tweet reporting on his departure from the Patriots. They also made sure to mention that his Pats career ended with a loss to the Jets.

“Bill Belichick, who lost two Super Bowls to the Giants, expected to part ways with Patriots later today, reports say, as 24-year tenure ends with regular season loss to Jets,” NBC New York tweeted.

This isn’t the first time that NBC New York has done this bit. In fact, they do it quite often, as there are seven previous tweets that pull the same “lost to the Giants” joke. You have to respect a running joke and a cross-city rivalry, which New York and Boston certainly have.

Despite being 71 years old, Belichick is reportedly interested in coaching next season, with teams such as the Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Washington Commanders sniffing around.

All told, in his 23 years as the Patriots head coach, Belichick went 266-121 in the regular season and won six Super Bowls: XXXVI (2001), XXXVIII (2003), XXXIX (2004), XLIX (2014), LI (2016), and LIII (2018).

One reported reason that Belichick wants to continue coaching is that he’s just 15 victories away from the NFL’s all-time wins record for a head coach, which was set by Miami Dolphins legend Don Shula at 347.

If Belichick does land with a team that seems built to win now, he’d probably need two seasons as head coach to break the record, as it’s difficult to imagine him posting a 15-2 record in his first season. According to the betting odds, the favorites are the Chargers, likely due to the presence of franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.

The Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans are also in search of a new head coach.
