North Carolina paid a lot of money while investigating Bill Belichick’s inner circle at the school.
In September, it was revealed that the school was investigating UNC GM Michael Lombardi and Belichick’s son, Steve Belichick, who was the team’s defensive coordinator.
According to ESPN, Lombardi resigned after “human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee.”
Steve Belichick was being investigated for using drugs and providing drugs to players. Other staffers were investigated over possible relationships.
Lawyers hired to conduct the investigation are also questioning people about whether defensive coordinator Steve Belichick used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player — and, separately, about whether a member of UNC’s recruiting staff had a sexual relationship with a player, people familiar with the investigation told WRAL. The lawyers also asked about possible sexual relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff, the people said.
According to Sportico, North Carolina spent $914k in lawyer fees to investigate Steve Belichick, Michael Lombardi, and other staffers.

The University of North Carolina paid outside law firms more than $914,000 to investigate allegations made against former football general manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, according to public records obtained by Sportico.
The bulk of the spending—$821,339—went to Barnes & Thornburg, which entered into a professional services agreement with the university on Aug. 5. The agreement established a billing rate of $990 an hour for the firm’s principal counsel, Nate Huff, who led the investigation.
In the end, only Steve Belichick and Michael Lombardi resigned.
