Formula 1 racing has absolutely skyrocketed in popularity in recent years in the United States.

The series went from one grand prix in the United States to three. It went from zero US-based teams on the grid to potentially two in the coming years, and ratings for races on ESPN have absolutely skyrocketed.

A large reason for that boost in popularity is the “Drive to Survive” Netflix series which began in 2019 and chronicled the 2018 Formula 1 season. The docuseries goes behind the scenes with footage and interviews never before seen to give fans a deeper dive into the sport.

The show hit an all-time high in interest following a dramatic 2021 season. That season saw seven-time series champion Lewis Hamilton defending his crown against hard-charging Dutchmen Max Verstappen.

Ultimately, Verstappen won his first series championship. He did so with a dramatic last-lap pass of Hamilton in the last race of the season.

This year’s edition of the show follows Verstappen’s attempt to defend that title amid new regulations.
