Netflix isn’t backing down from Tony Hinchcliffe.
Two weeks ago, Hinchcliffe found himself in hot water when he made a George Floyd joke at the roast of Kevin Hart, which aired on Netflix.
“The Black community is so proud of you,” he said. “Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can’t breathe.”
Hinchcliffe’s joke drew strong reactions from other comedians, including Chelsea Handler, who called him a racist.
“It’s just everything we know, that they’re racist, that they’re bigots, they’re sexist,” Handler said during an interview on the Funny Knowing You podcast.
“I don’t find those jokes to be funny,” Handler said. “Jokes about lynching Black people, lynching is not a joke. That’s worse than rape.”
Despite the backlash, Netflix is set to release an upcoming comedy special featuring Hinchcliffe on Tuesday, June 9th.
The special entitled “Man of the People” is promoting the fact that Hinchcliffe is willing to joke about anything no matter how offensive it is.
“Tony Hinchcliffe returns with another brutally unapologetic hour from comedy’s favorite equal-opportunity offender. Tony tears into every group imaginable in and outside his audience proving that nobody is safe when a true man of the people grabs the microphone.” says the Netflix caption.
