When one woman asked for 'roadkill fries' at In-N-Out, she was taken aback by the worker's refusal to make them.

In-N-Out is known for accommodating customers who want its secret menu items. Want a grilled onion-wrapped burger? No problem. How about animal-style fries? You got it. So when one woman asked for “roadkill fries,” she was taken aback by the worker’s refusal.

“You guys, I just embarrassed myself at In-N-Out,” Kelsey Travis (@kelsey.travis27) says as she walks out of the restaurant. “I asked for roadkill fries. She said, ‘Never heard of it. We can’t do that.’ Then I explained it to her, and she still said they couldn’t do it. So my question is, have you ever had an In-N-Out employee tell you no?”

TikTokers defended the employee.

“That’s a modification that people do after they order their food so yeah you’re wrong she’s right,” one viewer said.

With help from the comments, Travis realized her mistake.

“Did you even look at the menu? roadkill fries don’t even exist on the secret menu, it’s a tiktok thing,” another pointed out.

The 21-second video, which seemed to be lighthearted on Travis’ end, created a perfect space for In-N-Out goers, current employees and diehards to discuss all things Roadkill Fries. Is it on the menu, off the menu or not a real thing?

What Are In-N-Out’s Roadkill Fries?

Roadkill fries are a real thing—just not an official thing. They are a mashup of two items from In-N-Out Burger’s not-so-secret menu (yes, that’s an official menu): the animal-style fries (an order of fries topped with melted cheese, grilled onions, and signature spread) and the flying dutchman (Two slices of cheese melted between two beef patties). Just order these two items, and be aware that assembly is required.

Roadkill fries are essentially animal-style fries loaded with meat.

A Road Of Confusion

So, why are roadkill fries popular among customers? Short answer: The internet.

The earliest mention found of roadkill fries was an article from FoodBeast published in April of 2015. The article titled, The Ultimate Guide to In-N-Out, laid out some “easy do it yourself creations”). Roadkill fries made the list. Now, hordes of TikTokers are popularizing the DIY item—and even adding their own twists. One man made his roadkill fries spicy by adding pickled Cascabella peppers to the mix.

Free Hot Chocolate

While Travis had little success getting her hands on roadkill fries, she did have success with another little-known hack: free hot chocolate.

“Also, did you know if it’s raining, kids can get a free hot chocolate?” she questions, ending her video with a hot chocolate in hand.

This is true. In-N-Out not only confirmed this on social media in the past, but it also revealed what hot chocolate it uses.

“Stay warm this season with a cup of hot cocoa made with Ghirardelli®. Don’t forget, when it’s raining or snowing at your local In-N-Out Burger, children 12 and under can get a free hot cocoa!” it wrote on Instagram in 2024.
