North American University is one of the worst college football teams in the United States. The Stallions frequently lose by a staggering point differential and this season is not the exception.

NAU lost by 83 points on Saturday night, which is its worst loss of the year by a very small margin.

To understand why this keeps happening, it is first important to understand the university and how it came to exist. The backstory provides a lot of clarity!

Texas Gulf Institute was initially founded in 2007 in the Greater Greenspoint area of Houston. Its founders hail from Turkey. They started the school with a focus on teaching English as a second language.

Texas Gulf Institute became North American College when it added Bachelor of Science degrees in 2010. North American College became North American University in 2013 after being authorized to offer a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. The university is recognized by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges so as sketchy as it might seem, it’s pretty legit.

North American University moved out of Greenspoint to Stafford in 2015. Around that time, its Turkish founders started to understand the important of collegiate athletics in the United States and lobbied for sanctioned athletic programs. The goal was to not only increase enrollment, but to further validate the university’s status.

North American University’s football team loses a lot.

The Stallions played their first-ever college football season right in the middle of the pandemic in 2020. They have played a lot of “buy games” as an NAIA program in the four years since, which led to a lot of lopsided results— to say the least. NCAA schools essentially paid North American University a good chunk of money to lose, which helped to build a mostly nonexistent athletic budget.

Some of the results have been rough.

North American lost 91-0 to Portland State in 2023. Its only wins in program history come against Louisiana Community Christian College, Arkansas Baptist College, Atlantis University, and TC Texas College. This year has been especially brutal so far.

The Stallions are 0-4 by a combined score of 288-13.

  • at Stephen F. Austin: 77-0
  • vs. Wayland Baptist: 41-6
  • at Texas Wesleyan: 80-0
  • at Hardin-Simmons: 90-7

Ouch.

To be fair, Hardin-Simmons is a D-III powerhouse. It totaled 538 yards on Saturday night with an average of 10.8 yards per play. North-American completed just nine of its 21 pass attempts and averaged less than two yards per carry for a total of 176 yards of offense.

Fortunately, NAU’s next two games are against two schools it defeated in the past. The Stallions may finally get in the win column after four-straight losses by an average of 69 points.
