Marcus Freeman got off to a rough start this season in his debut campaign at the helm of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The former defensive coordinator lost his first two games to Ohio State and Marshall and was almost immediately under scrutiny.

But, the team responded for Freeman, and Notre Dame won nine of their last eleven games en route to a 9-4 season. That 9th win came in dramatic fashion, as they came from behind to beat South Carolina in the Gator Bowl, 45-38.

But, quarterback play was a problem for Notre Dame all year. 2nd-year player Tyler Buchner won the job out of camp. But, he struggled before getting benched and then injured. Drew Pyne was the next quarterback to play, and his stats were fine. He threw for just over 2000 yards and 22 touchdowns to go along with 6 interceptions. That’s fine, but the offense never really took off. And, Pyne announced he was going in the transfer portal in December. He will be at Arizona State next season.

The Irish have a lot of talent coming back as they look forward to the 2023 season. But, quarterback was a huge hole if they hoped to get back to the College Football Playoff in 2023. Now, they have filled that void in a big way.

Wake Forest star Sam Hartman is transferring to Notre Dame

Sam Hartman has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football over the past two seasons. He’s thrown for just under 8000 yards and 77 touchdowns in the last two seasons for Wake Forest. And, his career survived a health scare before the 2022 season, making him a household name in the sport.

He entered the transfer portal last month and decided to go to Notre Dame.

This is a huge get for Freeman, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, and the Irish.

Some fans even think it could help them win a national championship.

Time will tell. But, it’s certainly a promising development for the Golden Domers.
